Building work commences July 2010 - Volunteers required
Good news at last. While Sandra and I were in Comanesti in July we spoke to the builder that had constructed our garage and received a revised estimate from him for the work on the Medical Centre. Contracts were signed shortly afterwards and before we left to come home he had started with the building work. He will be going to Germany at the end of September, so he is planning to finish before he goes, which will be fantastic. It is great to see progress after all this time! Click here to see photos >>
We do still need to raise a bit more money for the work to be completed and for the transportation of the dental suite. We are now looking for volunteers to go over to Comanesti and do the decorating, mainly painting, at the end of September/early October. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to become part of this much-needed and rewarding project. So Grab a Paintbrush and help us make a difference - check out the How to Help page for more details of how you can get involved

The next key project for the BHRG is to set up a Community/Health centre. This is desperately needed because the poor people from the Zavoi district of Comanesti do not have access to affordable medical or health treatment; the predominantly elderly and poor residents who live in the area, often cannot afford vitamin pills, let alone anti-biotics and some can only afford to buy one tablet at a time because of the cost. As they do not have the money for treatment or medication they have to suffer discomfort and pain in silence.
BHRG want to assist with the development of the Community/Health Centre in partnership with the Comanesti Town Council, where a dentist, optician and doctor could be based, and health care advice and support could be given ie counselling/family planning/wellbeing courses The health centre will be available for anyone living in the very poor Zavoi district of Comanesti.
The Biggin Hill Romania Group, call upon YOU to help give everyone the right to the health care and opportunities that we so often take for granted. Many assume that things must have improved hugely since the early nineties but the truth is that although there are now noticeable efforts being made to improve conditions for the thousands of children that were abandoned back then, conditions are still extremely appalling for very many people. Babies are still being abandoned and there are many hundreds who cannot afford medication or who are homeless.
The Community/Health centre will be located in the other wing on the first floor of the centre, opposite the FFLC. The intention is that the people who currently live on that part of the floor will be moved to rooms on the top floor of the building. However before any work can start on the Community/Health centre the rooms on the top floor will need to be refurbished to make them habitable, so that the residents can move from the first floor to the top floor; this will include putting in toilets and showers, as well as electrical work, repairs and decorating. Only once this is done and the rooms vacated on the first floor, can we even start work on the Community/Health Centre.
Phil Williams and Lyn Jenkins will be going to Comanesti at the end of February to do some initial planning for the work and meet with building contractors. We can then get an idea of what needs to be done, how long it will take, how much it will cost and draw up an inventory listing to see what materials we might be able to source from the UK to transport over and what jobs volunteers could go over and do.
Watch this space for updates after Phil and Lyn's return.
We also need to raise more funds for the project. We currently have GBP17,000, but know this will not be enough to carry out the work for the Community/Health Centre and refurbishment of the top floor rooms. Please see 'How you can Help' - if you can help us turn this much needed project into a reality it would be appreciated.
